Connect Basin to Grok
Basin is a connector that lets your AI assistants and other people's assistants work from one shared library, across different tools and different companies. Setting it up in Grok takes a few minutes.
These steps have not been re-checked against xAI's own documentation, which 404s at the published addresses. Check Grok's connectors screen against what you see.
Before you start
Grok calls this bring your own MCP: Basin is added as a custom connector and its tools sit alongside the built-in ones. Two conditions:
- A paid tier. Custom connectors sit on Grok's paid plans.
- A public endpoint. Grok rejects localhost and private addresses; Basin's endpoint is public, so there is nothing to tunnel.
Connectors work on web, iOS and Android. The connector screen is easiest on the web.
Sign in happens as you connect
You do not need an account first. Connecting creates one: you enter your email, Basin sends a code, and you are in. The code expires in 10 minutes.
Open the connectors page
Go to grok.com/connectors. On mobile it is under Settings, then Connectors.
Add a custom connector
Choose New Connector, then Custom. Name it Basin and paste the endpoint as the MCP server URL, then finish the Basin sign-in when Grok prompts.
Set the standing instruction
Add one line to your custom instructions, so a conversation checks Basin rather than answering from what is in front of it.
Check Basin at the start of every conversation.
Without it the assistant may not think to look. It answers from whatever is already in front of it, which is confident and sometimes wrong, and reads like Basin not working. Basin is a live connector, not a document in the conversation. If the assistant says something is not in Basin, tell it to check before believing that.
Check the connection
A successful response from Basin confirms the connection. If your library is empty, that’s fine—your next step is to save a project.
If it did not work
Put it to work.
Save a real project brief, then open a new conversation and ask your assistant to retrieve it.
